Before we tipped our hats to top jockey Victor Espinoza, we were holding out until the Belmont Stakes last Saturday, hoping California Chrome would take the Triple Crown. It wasn’t to be; in fact by the backstretch it was clear that the 3-year-old thoroughbred wouldn’t deliver a three-race sweep, a prize only 11 horses have claimed since 1978. That doesn’t diminish our enthusiasm for Espinoza, one of the world’s great jockeys. He’s won more than 3,100 races, with his horses earning about $162 million. The 42 year-old, who is No. 11 of 12 children, grew up on a dairy farmoutside of Mexico City. He chalks his career up to exceptional luck and the inspiration of his older brother and fellow jockey, José, who suffered a serious accident last year that forced him to give up racing. Here are the brothers talking to ESPN Deportes about racing, the Triple Crown and California Chrome.
Stooping to new lows, we can report that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are topping off their European honeymoon with a visit to Mexico. Don’t ask… it’s a celebrity vacation. After two weeks in Ireland and Prague, the newlyweds are headed to the exclusive Punta Mita beachfront resort on the north end of Banderas Bay, about 16km north of Puerto Vallarta. There’s a hilltop archeological site nearby, dating back to 800 AD. Somehow we doubt the couple will be visiting anything so yesterday!
