After Hours

  • It’s the year of living fabulously for Lupita Amondi Nyong’o, recently named People magazine’s most beautiful woman of 2014. The 31-year old actress was born in Mexico City and holds dual Mexican-Kenyan citizenship. In the past year, Lupita (a diminutive for Guadlupe) has racked up an Academy Award; a contract as the new face of Lancôme cosmetics; and recognition among the well-clad crowd as the newest fashion icon to grace red carpets. This week she wowed the crowds at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual gala, wearing Prada and looking spectacular.
  • A belated Cinco de Mayo to all of you who love a fiesta! North of the border 5 May is a big day, honouring Mexican heritage and pride from Los Angeles to New York. In Mexico? Not so much. So what’s it really celebrating? The day commemorates Mexico’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Unfortunately for Mexico, they won the battle and lost the war when the French captured Mexico City and set up Maximilian I as emperor. Three years later the French were expelled and Maximilian executed. The US glommed on to the holiday in the 1940s with the rise of the Chicano civil rights movement. Now it’s a worldwide celebration. Hey Mexico, get your groove on for 2015! Check out this Cinco de Mayo video for more.
Hasta la próxima!
