- Doyenne of Mexican letters Elena Poniatowska receives her country’s Medalla Bellas Artes. Known as the Princesa Roja for her social activism and hard-hitting political reporting, Poniatowska has published 40 books. She won the prestigious Cervantes prize in 2013. Her best known work is La noche de Tlatelolco (Massacre In Mexico in its English translation), which recounts the 1968 student protests in Mexico City. There’s a moving photographic reminder in this video.
- Seems like everyone is getting in the pot-growing craze. Or at least some people think they should. Former Mexican President Vicente Fox was cornered this week by the Mexican actress Carmen Salinas, who apparently thought weed farming was a perfect retirement plan. Visiting Fox’s ranch the actress couldn’t resist. “Do you grown marijuana here?” she asked, no doubt admiring the perfect climatic conditions. “Oh no-only vegetables!” was Fox’s reply. Bet he never inhaled either.
Hasta la próxima!
